Thesis:

Weaving the Future: Exploring Orange Fibre Fabric with Natural Dyeing
for Scalable Sustainable Textiles

Abstract:
This practice-based dissertation investigates the potential of orange fibre fabric in natural dyeing as a sustainable alternative within the fashion industry. By analysing the effects of various mordants (alum, tannin, salt, iron, lemon juice, and soda ash) and three natural dyes (onion skin, pomegranate rind, and lac extract), the research evaluates colour absorption, intensity, evenness, consistency, texture, and hand-feel. Sensory panel assessment and RGB colour analysis confirm that mordants significantly influence dye uptake and fabric properties, with alum producing the most vibrant results, iron deepening hues, and salt maintaining softness but reducing saturation amongst others. Findings align with industry efforts to scale natural dyeing, reinforcing the feasibility of bio-based textiles for sustainable manufacturing. By optimising dyeing techniques, orange fibre fabric presents a promising option for large-scale applications, supporting the fashion industry's shift toward environmental responsibility.
